February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

Teen Dating Violence, Defined

Dating violence is a type of relationship violence that occurs between young people. It is defined as when a person uses a pattern of abusive behavior toward their partner to gain power and control over them. Dating violence can include one or more types of abuse, and it can look like:

  • Physical abuse: pushes, shakes, slaps, kicks or spits on you. Holds you down. Throws or breaks your personal belongings (ex. books, cell phone, etc.)
  • Emotional abuse: insults you, calls you hurtful names or embarrasses you in public. Constantly accuses you of cheating. Threatens to hurt you or expose secrets about you
  • Sexual abuse: unwanted kissing or touching, pressures you to have sex or makes you feel guilty for not wanting to have sex, or demands that you send them sexually explicit photos or videos.
  • Digital abuse: constantly calls, texts or DMs you to find out where you are or who you’re with, tells you who you can be friends with on social media, or sends mean messages on social media either directly from them or anonymously. Cultural/Spiritual abuse: Criticizes your spiritual or tribal beliefs.
  • Financial abuse: Steals money from you, your family or friends.

Dear Community Members,
We are reaching out again to provide updates regarding the trial and what is offered here in Sipayik for supports. We know that this has been a very stressful time for our people.  Words cannot express the devastating impact the death and loss of Kim Neptune has had for her family and the community as a whole. As many know, the trial has begun, and it is very painful for all affected.  Though we have no definite dates, we understand that the trial may continue throughout the month of December. This affects everyone deeply. Our hearts are heavy, and our prayers are with the community.
At this time, the following supports are planned:
·         Wabanaki Wampum CISM (Critical Incident Stress Management) team will be helping to support a weekly Strength and Support Fire. The fire will be lit on Thursday December 14 and then again, on Tuesday December 19th, starting at 8 am and closing at 10 pm at the Transition House on Route 1 in Sipayik. The fire is offered for everyone.
·         The PPHC Behavioral Health Department is offering drop-in hours from 2 pm-3 pm Monday through Friday. If additional supports are needed outside these times, please contact Linda Nicholas @ 853-5011.
·         We hope to offer times with additional support and activities for the children at the Youth and Rec Center.
·          The Drop-In center Woluke building located at the old daycare will be open Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 4 pm-8:30 pm.
·
AA Meeting Monday weekly @ 7:00 pm-8:00 pm
·
NA Meeting Wednesday weekly @ 7:00 pm-8:00 pm
·
Wellbriety Meeting Friday weekly @ 7:00 pm-8:00 pm
·
The Wabanaki Care Line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via phone call or text at 1-844-844-2622.
Going forward, we will continue to assess needs and coordinate additional support as we all move through this difficult situation and move toward healing.
